An Evidence-Based Review of Sodium Bicarbonate As a Dentifrice Agent

Barnes CM.

Abstract: One of the most commonly asked questions of dental hygiene care providers is, “What toothpaste should I use?”  It is the responsibility of the care provider to recommend a dentifrice that meets the individual’s needs.  One of the dentifrice agents that is readily available in commercial dentifrices is sodium bicarbonate.  This article provides a brief history of the dental applications for sodium bicarbonate, as well as an evidence-based review of the scientific basis for the inclusion of sodium bicarbonate in dentifrices.
