Education & Reserch
For over 170 years, baking soada has been recognized for its unique oral care benefits. ARM & HAMMER™, the baking soda expert, is pleased to provide you with the latest clinical information on the advantages of baking soda toothpaste and power toothbrushes for your patients.
Toothpastes specially formulated with ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda, fluoride and STAIN DEFENSE™ or Liquid Calcium™ Technology (ACP) provide a range of solutions for patient care.
Baking soda is a gentle, mild abrasive that safely removes plaque including in hard-to-reach areas. ARM & HAMMER™ baking soda toothpastes also remove extrinsic stains, help neutralize the acids that cause dental erosion, and neutralize oral malodors, leaving a clean mouth feel and fresh breath.
Dentinal hypersensitivity presents as a sudden, sharp pain in response to stimuli. It occurs when fluid moves within open and exposed dentinal tubules. Relief is obtained by blocking the tubules or preventing the nerve fibers from transmitting pain. ARM & HAMMER™ Sensitive toothpastes contain the maximum level of potassium nitrate permitted in a toothpaste, to help prevent the transmission of pain from tooth and nerve sensitivity.
Dental erosion resulting from extrinsic and intrinsic acids is increasingly seen in patients. The most common causes are extrinsic acids from acidic sodas and energy drinks. With advanced dental erosion, patients may be presented with teeth that have changed shape (more rounded or thinner) or appear darker (shine-through of the dentin). As erosion continues, dentin may be exposed. Dental erosion cannot be reversed. Enamel strengthening can help to prevent acids from affecting tooth structure.
Stain Prevention and Whitening
Extrinsic tooth stains are mostly caused by tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco. Extrinsic stains can be removed by dentifrice abrasives. Baking soda is a mild abrasive in some dentifrices, shown to gently remove and lift extrinsic stains. ARM & HAMMER™ STAIN DEFENSE™ toothpastes such as Advance White™ Extreme Whitening and Complete Care™ Plus Whitening contain both baking soda and hydrogen peroxide that in combination remove stains and whiten teeth.
Power toothbrushes are more effective for plaque removal than manual toothbrushes. They remove plaque safely and gently, without requiring patients to use a special technique.
